What is ITIL® Best Practice?

ITIL is the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world. It provides a cohesive

set of best practice, drawn from the public and private sectors internationally.

ITIL advocates that IT services are aligned to the needs of the business and support its core processes. It provides guidance to organizations and individuals on how to use IT as a tool to facilitate business change, transformation and growth.

The ethos behind the development of ITIL is the recognition that organizations are becoming increasingly dependent on IT in order to satisfy their corporate aims and meet their business needs. This leads to an increased requirement for reliable, high-quality IT services.

IT Service Management (ITSM) derives enormous benefits from a best practice approach. Because ITSM is driven both by technology and the huge range of organizational environments in which it operates, it is in a state of constant evolution. Best practice, based on expert advice and input from ITIL users is both current and practical, combining the latest thinking with sound, common sense guidance.

The latest edition of ITIL (ITIL 2011) was published on 29th July 2011.

Key Benefits of ITIL

ITIL provides a robust framework for identifying, planning, delivering and supporting IT services that can be adapted and applied to all business and organizational environments. The guidance covers the entire service lifecycle from the identification of business then IT requirements, to designing and embedding a solution to maintaining the new service through continuous review and improvement.

Successfully adopting ITIL can help you improve services by providing ways of helping you:

  • Manage business risk and service disruption or failure

  • Improve and develop positive relationships with your customers by delivering efficient services that meet their needs

  • Establish cost-effective systems for managing demand for your services

  • Support business change whilst maintaining a stable service environment

ITIL® QUALIFICATION SCHEME

The ITIL Qualifications scheme provides a modular approach to the ITIL framework, and is comprised of a series of qualifications focused on different aspects of ITIL Best Practice, to various degrees of depth and detail.

ITIL Practitioner Certification

The ITIL® Practitioner certification offers practical guidance on how to adopt and adapt the ITIL framework to support your business' objectives.

It is the next step after ITIL Foundation for professionals who have already learned the basics of IT Service Management (ITSM) and the business value of well-designed and delivered services. Where ITIL Foundation focuses on the 'what' and the 'why', ITIL Practitioner shows 'how' to start adopting and adapting the ITIL framework within day-to-day situations and responsibilities, giving individuals more confidence in their ability to structure and contribute to ITSM initiatives.

ITIL Practitioner does not replace any of the existing ITIL qualifications.

The modular, tiered structure of the qualification not only offers candidates the flexibility in relating to the different disciplines and areas of ITIL, but generally makes ITIL qualifications more accessible and achievable.

ITIL® Credit System

The ITIL Credit System supports the ITIL® qualification scheme by recognizing your investment in ITIL qualifications.

Within the ITIL credit system, each ITIL and ITIL-related qualifications has been assigned a specific credit value, based upon their level of ITIL content.

Upon successful completion of any ITIL examination recognized under the scheme, a candidate will be awarded both the certification and the credits attached.

The credits earned through this system can then be used towards the ITIL Expert level of certification, for which candidates must have earned a required number of credits (22) from qualifications which cover the full spectrum of ITIL best practice.
